Risk Factors for Coronary Heart Disease
The following
factors associated with CHD are adapted from Expert Panel on
Detection, Evaluation, and treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in
Adults. Summary of the second report on the national Cholesterol
Education Program (NCEP) expert panel on detection, evaluation, and
treatment of high blood cholesterol in adults (Adult treatment Panel
II) JAMA 1993; 269:3015-3023.
Professional
opinions will vary. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death
in the United States, accounting for nearly one half of all deaths.
Approximately 980,000 deaths from heart disease occur each year,
with the majority due to coronary artery disease. This has produced
a rate of heart attack in the United States of one every 33 seconds.
Treatable risk factors include cigarette smoking, hypertension,
hyperlipidemia, a low-fiber diet, obesity and a sedentary
lifestyle.
The following chart is an adaptation of
available information, modified to present new parameters in CAD
protection.
